If you've ever bought precious metals from a large national retailer online, you may have noticed an unexpected tax charge at checkout — a line item that felt like it came out of nowhere. Here's what's actually happening, and why it matters to Alabama buyers.

The SSUT Problem With Big Retailers

Alabama operates a Simplified Sellers Use Tax (SSUT) program that allows out-of-state online retailers to collect and remit a flat use tax on sales shipped into Alabama. Many of the largest precious metals dealers in the country — including several of the biggest names in the industry — are enrolled in this program.

That means when you order from them, you may see a tax added at checkout even on products that are technically exempt from Alabama's standard sales and use tax under Rule 810-6-2-.27. The SSUT structure creates friction that a knowledgeable local dealer simply doesn't have.

The bottom line: A national dealer enrolled in SSUT may collect tax on your order regardless of what the product is. A local Alabama dealer operating under the standard sales tax rules applies the exemption correctly to qualifying bullion — meaning you pay nothing extra on eligible purchases.

What Alabama's Exemption Actually Covers

Alabama removed sales taxes from investment-grade gold, silver, platinum, and palladium coins and bars in 2018, and subsequently extended and clarified that exemption — covering all common forms of bullion and removing reporting requirements — through May 31, 2028.

For bullion to qualify, the item must be refined, must contain at least 90% precious metal content, and must be priced based on its weight and purity — not its form, rarity, or numismatic value. Most standard investment-grade gold and silver bars and coins meet this threshold easily.

What a Local Dealer Does Differently

At McFarland Metals, every product we carry is sourced with Alabama's exemption requirements in mind. We know which bars qualify, which coin types qualify, and which products fall outside the exemption. You won't get a surprise tax charge because we don't add one on qualifying bullion.

Beyond the tax advantage, buying local means:

  • Pick up in person. No shipping delays, no waiting for a FedEx signature window, no wondering if your package is sitting on a truck somewhere.
  • Inspect what you're buying. Important for first-time buyers and experienced stackers alike. Hold it, verify it, leave confident.
  • Talk to a real expert. Someone who knows the Alabama market, understands your goals, and can help you think through your allocation — not a call center following a script.

If you're spending several hundred or several thousand dollars on physical precious metals, the difference between an unexpected tax charge and paying nothing on a qualified purchase is meaningful. That's money that stays in your stack.
